Test run continues for three public washrooms

Update: The pilot continues this weekend.

Washroom facilities will be open between 3 pm and 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, and 10 am to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Benson Park in Picton, behind the Bloomfield Town Hall and in Wellington Park.

Two units are to be open at all three locations.

Low numbers were reported using the washrooms last weekend.

MAY 30 – The municipality is quietly opening three public washrooms – in Picton, Bloomfield and Wellington – this weekend.

Washroom facilities will be open between 10 am to 7 pm Saturday and Sunday with plans to go above and beyond the recommendations of the local health unit to ensure the safety of both washroom users and staff who are cleaning the facilities.

One unisex washroom unit is to be open at each of the three locations. One person will be allowed to enter the washroom unit at one time. A municipal staff member will be on site at all times to manage access. Municipal staff will wear non-medical masks and have sanitizer for public use.

The washrooms at all three locations will be cleaned throughout the day on a rotational basis. Staff will use products deemed effective against viruses including COVID-19. At the end of the day, the washrooms will be thoroughly sanitized and locked.

The washrooms have been retrofitted to reduce touchpoints. Signs will be posted to encourage proper hand washing and sanitizing as well as physical distancing while waiting to use the washroom.

After the weekend, the municipality will evaluate how the test went and determine the best path forward for continuing to offer access to public washrooms.

Given that the County expect washrooms at Sandbanks Provincial Park to remain closed this weekend, it wants to avoid large crowds gathering at the three opened washrooms so are not widely publicizing they are open.
Local businesses are being informed so they can direct customers who may require the facilities.

Just out of curiosity how much is it costing the taxpayer for the municipal employees who are supervising the public washrooms “quietly opened” this weekend? Last weekend it was mentioned that they would be watching the entrances to Sandbanks Park. Overtime is not cheap. We just received a significant tax hike because the county supposedly needed money. Now it seems we can afford to make certain our tourists have a place to go, even if it involves overtime. Where did we suddenly get this money?
