Trash clean up day named to honour Owen Jones

In honor of a man long known for his work to clean up the streets of Picton, Mayor Steve Ferguson proclaimed April 23, 2022 as Owen Jones Memorial Clean-up Day.

Jones was often observed using tools at hand – paper coffee cups and cardboard – to clear curbsides and gutters and in winter, removed snow from sidewalks in front of businesses.

“Owen valued his independence and privacy and took great pride in his work with no expectation of recognition, remuneration or gratitude,” said Ferguson during council Tuesday night.

The Saturday closest to Earth Day is traditionally the annual Trash Bash event in Prince Edward County.

“It’s an opportunity for residents to follow Owen’s example to beautify the community he so cared about,” said Ferguson.

This is an excellent tribute to one of Prince Edward County’s special people. Let’s all honour Owen every day by taking care to put trash where it belongs – in your garbage bin at home or in the new receptacles on Main Street.
