Weather poor, but spirits high for Halloween

A warmer temperature, but steady rain greeted Halloween 2013 but trick-or-treaters trekked through their routes with delightful costumes and smiles and some, with service to their community.
Students from PECI’s Make Poverty History Club reported great success in their first “We Scare Hunger” campaign in which they collected donations for the local food bank, instead of candy, when they went door knocking.

“We Scare Hunger is a national campaign organized by the international charity, Free the Children,” said Heather Beach, co-president of the Make Poverty History team with Hannah Sarley.

Throughout the school year, the Make Poverty History team organizes fundraisers, both within the school and in the community. The team’s aim is to raise money for the village of Oloirien in Kenya, Africa. As well as supporting their community, they raise funds to go toward installing a well, proper cleaning facilities and classrooms and providing alternate incomes for the community’s families.

Another upcoming community event by the Make Poverty History Team is the Holiday Dinner, set for Friday, Dec. 6th at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Plans include a silent auction and live music by Katalin Kiss and John McKinney.

Meanwhile, if you want to keep your Halloween decorations, you’d better bring them inside as a wind warning continues over night with strong, damaging winds continuing into Friday morning.
