Workshops at the library building excitement for fourth Lantern Festival

Preparations for the fourth annual Firelight Lantern Festival got under way at the Picton Library this week.

Participants in the first workshops to create lanterns for this year’s circus theme will light up the parade from Benson Park to the Crystal Palace event Saturday, Nov. 12.

“This is a participatory parade where everybody joins in, and costumes are encouraged,” says event founder Krista Dalby.

They’ll be on stage at the Crystal Palace with musical styles including New Orleans Funk, Jazz, R&B, Ska, Soul, Reggae, Punk, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and Country.

The Firelight Festival at the Crystal Palace includes light installations to explore, childrens’ activities, and additional music from DJ Ombudsman.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, or Pay-What-You-Can.

From now until Nov. 9 there will be community lantern-making workshops at various locations around the County. All are welcome to come out and make their own lantern to carry in the parade; no experience or special talents are required, and the workshops are great fun for adults and children alike. All materials and instruction provided. For a complete list of workshop dates and locations, visit

Those interested in volunteering before or during the festival should contact Krista Dalby: at The Department of Illumination, or 613-471-1322. Follow the festival on Facebook:
