Sandy Macpherson sailed on a sea of applause as he received a Civic Recognition Award for his dedication in raising $15,000 for local cancer initiatives.
Prince Edward County Mayor Peter Mertens and councillor Robert Quaiff presented the 19-year-old sailor of Picton with the award during a regular council meeting on Tuesday.
Macpherson set sail non-stop around Lake Ontario last August battling high winds, loneliness and exhaustion, to raise funds and public awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society.
A humbled Macpherson accepted his award thanking his friends and family for their support noting it feels wonderful to be recognized for his achievement but he didn’t do it for the recognition.
Mertens called Macpherson a marvelous young man, full of initiative.
“He is an outstanding young citizen who is more than deserving of that award,” said Mertens.
