A gem of a first show at Crystal ‘cave’

Matt Fair of Research Casting International

Matt Fair, production manager at Research Casting International with an Albertosaurus (“Alberta lizard”) that was a bipedal predator at the top of the food chain when it lived in the late cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago. Fair, of Ameliasburgh was the show’s afternoon guest speaker. The company provides technical services for museums around the world – including fossil restoration, molding, casting and relocating of exhibits.

Hundreds of enthusiasts visited Picton’s Crystal Palace Sunday to explore dinosaurs, fossils, gems, minerals and jewellery at the Prince Edward County Rock, Gem and Mineral Clubs first show.
Organizer John Zandarin was pleased to see a line up at the door before the 10 a.m. opening and more than 600 people of all ages taking part in the event.
There were 26 vendors and dealers showing and selling their wares. Children toured the Crystal Cave to hunt for special rocks and young and older enjoyed viewing full-sized skeletons from Research Casting International.
During two special sessions, Dr. Steve Watts, of Queen’s University, discussed local geology and Matt Fair, of RCI, showed dinosaur skeletons and talked about their restoration.

The PEC club was formed last year to encourage an information exchange among members and other clubs with similar interests while promoting the study of mineralogy, geology, other earth sciences and the lapidary arts. The club shares knowledge and learning through field trips and guest speakers. For more information about the club, its meetings and how to join, call 613-476-5510.
