Picton’s Cole Norton blazed through two record-breaking runs at the Central Ontario Secondary School Association (COSSA) track meet yesterday in Belleville. Norton, a Prince Edward Collegiate Institute student, broke Bay of Quinte track meet records last week, and yesterday toppled records for the junior boys’ 100 and 200 metre dashes. He broke the 100 metre record of 11.10 set in 2005 running it in 11.01 and the 200 metre record of 23.21 set in 2009 running it in 23.13.
At the Bay of Quinte meet, the PECI Junior boys 4×100 relay team set a new record time of 46.64. Winning gold were Norton, Graysen St. Pierre, Blaine Swackhammer and Lucas Clarke.
“When I started this high school track season I had very high expectations,” said Norton. “My goal was not only to win, but to leave a mark at the Mary Ann Sills track, and that goal has been successful. In only two weeks I’ve manage to break five records including a remarkable one set by PECI’s 4×100 relay team. The next two weeks are very important for training and conditioning as I get closer to the provincial championships.”
Hundreds of high school students from the regions of Kawartha and Bay of Quinte Regions competed at the Mary-Anne Sills park and Bruce Faulds track and field facility. PECI fielded 21 participants.
The top six athletes in each event advance to the East Regionals next week, the final meet before OFSSA (Ontario Federation Secondary School Association).
