Firefighters investigating morning house fire

fire-dec-5Prince Edward County firefighters are investigating a blaze at 400 Main St., Picton, across from the hospital.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Rutter said there was a lot of damage to the house, as the fire was well under way when three calls came into the station just after 10 a.m. Monday morning.

“The firefighters did a good job,” Rutter said. “They were able to knock down the fire quickly. Station One was able to handle it so we didn’t have to call for support from other stations.”

There were no injuries to firefighters and the occupant of the home escaped. One of his dogs did not survive.

The shell of the home remains, which Rutter noted, helps firefighters get inside for the investigation.

That’s one of the benefits of getting a fire out quickly, Rutter said, so that the department can see more inside and better examine where the fire started, and its cause.

UPDATE: A Go-Fund-Me account has been set up by Amanda Hudgin. She notes her fiance’s grandfather, Roger Struthers, lost all his belongings in the fire. That link here: https://www.gofundme.com/czhm97yc
