78 fraud incidents in PEC with losses more than $800,000

Prince Edward OPP remind everyone to be cautious of falling victim to fraud.

From January to June of 2024, officers have responded to 78 fraud incidents with reported losses to members of the community of just over $815,000. October is Cyber Security Awareness Month.

“Although these frauds vary in nature, there are several common themes; an urgency to provide personal information and a demand to not tell anyone else about it,” said Lori Josephson, OPP Media Relations Officer. “The majority of these scams stem from correspondence online, or via phone call. This includes fake advertisements, social media and e-mail.”

Josephson offers tips to help people from being victimized, and reminds everybody that fraudsters are masters of trickery:
– Never let anyone pressure you into acting immediately. Take your time, slow down. YOU are in control of your information.
– Do not provide any personal information to someone you don’t know or trust.
– Navigate to legitimate websites and services on your own. Don’t follow links.
– Don’t be afraid to say no.
– If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is!
