Mabel Kleinsteuber boat launch closed Sept. 17

A licensed applicator will be using pesticides to control phragmites — an aquatic invasive species — at the Mabel Kleinsteuber Boat Launch (1260 County Road 12) on Thursday, Sept. 17.

The municipality is working with the West Lake Community Association’s Aquatic Invasive Phragmites Control Project on this work.

During this time, the Mabel Kleinsteuber Boat Launch will be closed to the public.

The municipality reports the pesticides are to be used in accordance with federal and provincial regulations for the purpose of managing, protecting, establishing, or restoring natural resources.

If left untreated, this aggressive, non-native plants would reduce native biodiversity, degrade wetlands and wildlife habitats, restrict access to shorelines and waterways, impair drainage and water movement and create a dense monoculture that displaces native vegetation.
