PECI Panthers Girls Hockey is heading into the holidays with their winning streak (4-0) intact after beating the Moira Secondary School Trojans 5-4. Captain Alex Staley was on fire with two goals and an assist in the winning effort.
The Trojans opened the scoring early in the first period and held the fragile lead until Panther Celina Fox squared it up with a little over two minutes left in first period. Abby Terpstra, her first of two assists for the night, and Sarah Young did the setting up on the Fox goal.
Alex’s back-to-back goal effort appeared to finally swing the momentum into the Panther favour with an end-to-end, unassisted, short-handed goal, while her second goal was setup by Celina and Abby.
At that point, Panthers tried to settle things down by sitting on their lead but were forced into a battle again as the Trojan’s took the lead with three unanswered goals making the score 4-3 in Trojan favour.
Panthers changed gears with a brilliant final offensive team effort for the win. Kelli Anne Maycock and Alex magically combined on a wide open net goal to tie the game. Sam Ward scored a wrap-around solo run which ended with a confused, searching and spinning Trojan goalie mistakenly pushing the puck across her own goal line.
Panthers would like to thank the community for its support this year by wishing all a happy and safe holiday season.
