A toast to County Wassail royalty

Jenifer Dean and Grant Howes, Wassail 2012 royalty

The County Cider Company’s Grant Howes and Jenifer Dean were crowned the King and Queen of Wassail Monday, at Huff Estates Winery.
The honorific title is bestowed on a grape grower or winery operator who has played a significant role in the development of the wine region. In days of yore, the king and queen were hoisted into the branches of trees to leave gifts to the spirits in some pagan tradition and make toasts. They are still encouraged to lead the toasting but don’t require any tree climbing skills.

The tradition of Wassailling begins in Prince Edward County this weekend to toast the end of harvest season and the health of the grape vines over the winter.
WASSAIL, spread over the last two weekends in November and the first weekend in December, is based on the tradition of celebrating the recent harvest and harvest to come before winter’s onslaught, with revellers travelling from manor to manor singing and consuming comfort foods and imbibing local grog.
In its modern incarnation, visitors drive from winery to winery, and if they are singing a seasonal tune upon arrival, they get free tastes of “mulled” or regular wine and the chance to sample culinary treats ranging from cassoulet, mini beef wellingtons, rum balls, cheese dishes, ginger bread, antipasto, shortbreads and roasted chestnuts in a festive atmosphere particular to each location.
