A waterfall of ribbons and medals for swim team members

byst-novemberThe Belleville Youth Swim Team members plowing through the pool are being rewarded with personal bests, medals and ribbons.

Head coach Brandon Oates reports the team – including nine county swimmers – returned from recent meets in Scarborough and Amherstview with an “abundance of medals and a batch of ribbons.”

“The 48 BYST swimmers who raced at the Ernestown meet in Amherstview dropped a ton of time — 1,136 seconds to be exact (just shy of 19 minutes),” he said. “In Scarborough, 17 BYST athletes had the opportunity to race in the 2015 Pan Am pool, where most qualified for multiple finals and the team collected 16 medals over the long, three-day meet.”

County swimmers included Ethan Williams, Austin Williams, Nikki Cairns, Morgan Clark, Quintin Lichty, Paige Kovacs, Karissa Manlow, Mia Noronha and Emeline Williams.

Oates said an arsenal of new top-tier swimmers emerged from the Amherstview meet and coaches Joyce Downey and Kristin Buchanan, witnessed their swimmers rack up several top-five finishes.

Tess Friar led the way with five first-place finishes and two second-place finishes. Victor Coutu also achieved five first-place finishes and a second-place finish, posting personal best times in all events.
Multiple BYST athletes finished in first place in at least one event, including: Alexa Buchanan, Alex Clazie, Charlotte Coutu, Isabella Dean, Owen Googe, Jayden MacDonald, Sadie Morphet, Joseph West, Emeline Williams and Justin Zechel.

BYST swimmers with top-five placings were: Madalyn Andrus, Caelen Calder, Jonathan Champagne, Shayla Coe, Zoe Desjardins, Logan Hicks, Isabella Isbester, Paige Launderville, Brendan MacQuarrie, Karissa Manlow, Ella O’Neill, Sophie O’Neill, Felicity Petherick, Joseph Rittenhouse, Amy Sommerville, Erin Sommerville, Abigail Szuch, Austin Williams and Ethan Williams.

“One hundred per cent personal best times is a tough feat, but BYST swimmers managed to pull it off,” noting Kendall Boldt, Alex Clazie, Charlotter Coutu, Isabella Dean, Owen Googe, Brendan MacQuarrie, Ella O’Neill, Sophie O’Neill, Gabrielle Quesnel, Emeline Williams and Justin Zechel.

Other BYST swimmers with impressive performances included Elizabeth Burnett, Craig Butcher, Jonah Googe, Ian Isbester, Julia Isbester, Myles Jackson, Paige Kovacs, Lauren MacQuarrie, Logan Moreau, Mia Noronha, Landon Oenema, Aleisha Rose, Carly Short, Laney Wansborough and Mackenzie Wilson.

At the Scarborough meet, “Ashley Allaire was on fire,” said Oates. “Over 17 races — all personal bests.”
Allaire managed to earn three silver medals.
Melissa Dingle also had a big meet with three silver and three bronze medals. Morgan Clark finished with two silver medals. Katelyn Cairns picked up two silver, and her sister, Stephanie Cairns, grabbed two bronze.
Nikki Cairns, Alexis Terrington and Gracey Vanberkel all had 100 per cent best times. Nate Shiers-Redhead was able to get one bronze in a tough 15-and-over male category. Nickolas Cinnamon, Josh Lamoureux and Quintin Lichty also competed well among some very fast opposition, said Oates.

“On the female side, Victoria McDowell, Rylan Miller, Leah Oster, Gwen Randall and Lauren Taylor displayed some phenomenal racing,” he said. “Special mention goes out to Morgan Clark, Melissa Dingle, Stephanie Cairns and Nate Shiers-Redhead for setting six new team records. This strong crew of swimmers includes five senior girls who’ll be graduating and heading off to university next year — some to compete in NCAA and the rest in the CIS.”

The BYST is back in action this weekend at their home meet where more than 300 competitors from across Ontario will compete at the Templeman Menninga Aquatic Centre. The event includes a finals session on Saturday night which will feature some of the fastest age-group racing in Canada.
