Active fun and learning replaces ‘children should whisper’ at the library

The Picton Branch Library has long been an active, exciting place for children and their families to spend time, play, and enjoy themselves. It has been decades since the “children should whisper in the library” philosophy has been in place, and all staff are dedicated to welcoming children as they are, which sometimes includes being a bit boisterous. In fact, we’re welcoming a whole new level of action with the Active Play Room.

Thanks to the Stark Family Fund, through the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area, the Active Play Space is a gross motor play area with places to climb, jump, and more. While we do change out the space on occasion, there is often a trampoline, climbing ladder, tunnels to explore and more. Thanks to Rob Spagnola, our neighbour in the Gym in the Armoury for lending his considerable experience in advising us on the resources available.

As the Government of Canada explains, there are many health benefits of physical activity – everything from opportunities for socializing, improved concentration, improved self esteem- even better academic scores. We see it every day at the Picton Branch – children drop into the Active Play Room to expend some energy and are then better able to focus on a story.

The pedal desks at the Picton Branch are another opportunity for older children and even adults to move while reading and it’s wonderful to see how popular they have been.
