Community Care and thrift shop closed Thanksgiving Monday
The Prince Edward Community Care office and the Thrift Shop at 153 Main St. Picton will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 12th, reopening Tuesday, Oct. 13th.
Hot Meals on Wheels – available up to five days/week
This program has been operating in Prince Edward County for 46 years and is open to any senior 60+ who needs support. Delivery to the door of a hot nutritious noon-time meal. Now available up to five days/week anywhere in Prince Edward County. Receiving a hot meal at the door means seniors have a regular check-in to help them stay safe and well in their own home. Crafty Wednesdays for seniors 60+ – Starts Oct. 7th
Come to the County Seniors’ Centre, on Wednesdays from 1 to 2pm to enjoy an afternoon of crafting! Bring crafts from home to do with friends or use one of the free craft kits. Join the County Seniors’ Centre for a series of informative webinars this October — designed to help older adults stay informed, engaged, and living well at home. Upcoming Webinars include: Micromobility and E-Scooter in Ontario, Tuesday Oct. 13th from 1-2 pm. Lisa Lapierre from the Ministry of Transportation office in Kingston tells you everything you need to know about E-scooters and mobility devices. This detailed presentation covers models, legal requirements, charging, helmets, passengers, cargo, safety, batteries and more; Bats-Myth and Mayhem with Terry Sprague, Thursday, Oct.15th from 1-2pm. Terry Sprague looks at the bat species found in the County, as well as in the Bay of Quinte area. Terry explores the world of “myth-conceptions” about bats getting into your hair, loving the taste of blood and being blind (as a bat) Available on Zoom or in person at the Seniors’ Centre; The Upside and Downside of Downsizing with Manson Slik, Oct. 22nd 1-2pm. Join Manson Slik of Gordan’s Downsizing and Estate Services to learn about the pros and cons of downsizing. In Person Supervised Walking Program – Starting Oct. 19th
Stay active all winter long with the supervised Walking Program. Participants can enjoy a safe, warm, and accessible space to walk and exercise during the cold, icy months. Whether the goal is to maintain fitness, improve health, or simply stay active, the program provides a comfortable indoor environment for regular physical activity throughout the winter. Curbside pick-up meal – Thursday, Oct. 29th
Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors holds monthly curbside pick-up meals. October’s event is on Thursday, October 29th and Kelly Bannister is preparing roast beef with gravy, mashed potatoes, veggies, salad, soup, and dessert. The cost is $20 per meal. Meals will be packaged hot and ready to be picked up at 12pm at Elks Lodge, 21 Elk Street in Picton. Advance ordering and payment are required – call 613-476-7493. Play Piano by Ear with Don Hinde– Starting Nov. 2nd
Retired music educator Don Hinde shares an easy approach to learning to play the piano by ear. Learning to play by ear involves developing the ability to reproduce music you hear without relying on sheet music. Registration is required for this eight-week class. Piano keyboards are provided. Stronger U Fitness Training – New Class starting Nov. 3rd

First Aid, CPR & Emergency Preparedness for Older Adults – Nov. 4th
ReadyPEC is offering a practical, hands-on First Aid, CPR, and AED session on Wednesday, Nov. 4th from 9:30am – 1:30pm at The County Seniors’ Centre, 74 King Street, Picton. This session is designed especially for older adults. These small-group sessions (maximum 12 participants) will be led by certified instructor Mike Bond, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions, practice skills, and build confidence.
This is not a certification course. It’s a friendly, supportive session focused on learning practical skills that can help you respond in an emergency and support family, friends, and neighbours. 55 Alive Driver Refresher Course- Thursday, Nov. 5th
The driver refresher course is developed by the Canada Safety Council and is designed specifically to help older drivers improve their driving skills. The program includes lunch, a 100-page workbook, useful resources, a certificate and instruction by David Fox, who is trained by the Canada Safety Council. Space is limited. Cost is $40. North Shore Euchre Social – Continues Nov. 6th
Prince Edward Community Care is offering monthly social euchre for seniors starting Friday, October 2nd from 1:30 to 4:00pm at the Sophiasburgh Town Hall in Demorestville. Seniors Information & Active Living Fair – Nov. 12th – Wellington & District Community Centre
Prince Edward Community Care is hosting the 9th Annual FREE Seniors Information and Active Living Fair. There will be over 50 vendors from the community showcasing the services they offer, as well as presentations and entertainment. This event starts at 10am with Opening Ceremonies and activities until 2pm. Organizers recommend planning to attend for the full day. All are welcome! Free lunch & refreshments while supplies last. Active Living Programs for seniors 60+ are available five days/week through the Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors. Also on offer is online events each month.
The Active Living Programs (ALP) offered include fitness, social and recreational activities both online and close to where seniors live. Membership in ALP is available to seniors 60+ for $25/year/person. Membership benefits include: full access to all programs and events (some programs may have additional fees); meet new friends; discover a new hobby, skill or talent; receive monthly updates of programs via email or a phone call for people without email.

What’s new at Community Care? The fall Active Living Program Guide has been released to the public! If you’re already an ALP member, you’ve been reading up on all the exciting programming on offer at the County Senior’s Centre and in community halls in the coming months. This new seasonal guide provides members course outlines and early sign up access to all the wonderful programs being offered from September to December. From informative webinars to art and music classes to seniors’ fitness training, the walking program, social euchre and bridge games and more, if it’s happening at the Senior’s Centre, it’s in the guide.

Volunteer Drivers needed
Prince Edward Community Care is seeking volunteer drivers for the escorted transportation program with availability of 2-3 hours a week to escort clients to medical appointments or for essential shopping trips. This volunteer opportunity is wonderful for those looking to meet new people in the community, and a chance to have a conversation along the way. Drivers are desperately needed for this essential program. Volunteers are contacted by agency staff 2-3 days in advance of a drive as same-day rides are not provided. The Thrift Shop accepts donations during regular hours of Mondays 1-4pm and Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Shoppers will find a full line of clothing for the whole family including shoes and accessories as well as furniture, housewares, dishes, books, sports equipment, linens, toys and much more. Volunteers Needed at Thrift Shop – particularly for Saturdays
Prince Edward Community Care needs volunteers to help in the Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street in Picton. If you have 3 hours per week (10am – 1pm or 1pm – 4pm) then give Community Care a call. No experience is necessary. A full orientation is offered. There are always experienced volunteers on site. Anyone wishing to work on the cash desk or to sort and price is welcome. Ontario Energy Support Program assistance
Do you struggle with your hydro bill? The Ontario Energy Support Program (OESP) is a program that can provide help for eligible low-income seniors. An eligible household ($28,000 or less for one person or $28,001 – $39,000 for a two person household) can receive between $35-$75 monthly credits on their hydro bill. Staff at Prince Edward Community Care can answer questions for seniors 60+ and help submit the OESP application. Seniors who have received Renewal and Information letters from OESP, can arrange for Community Care staff to help facilitate this renewal process. Seniors … borrow a tablet to get involved with online programming
Prince Edward Community Care and the PEC Library partner to make tablets available for seniors to participate in online programming. Training and support for seniors is provided by Libraries of PEC. Foot Care Clinics accepting new clients
Prince Edward Community Care operates Foot Care Clinics in Picton, Wellington and the newly re-opened Rossmore location. Infection control protocols for clients and staff are closely followed. Rides to medical appointments
Prince Edward Community Care offers an escorted transportation program that helps to maximize the independence of seniors with friendly volunteer drivers who closely follow all pandemic safety protocols to keep everyone safe. This program provides rides for seniors 60+ to medical appointments wherever they need to go including local or to destinations further away. Rides for essential shopping are also provided. The fee is reasonable for the clients and is based on .50/km. The volunteer waits with the client while they are in the appointment. Volunteer drivers are needed with a particular focus on providing local rides for seniors in Picton. Volunteers are contacted 2-3 days in advance of a drive as same-day drives are not provided. Groceries, medicines, & library books can be delivered
For seniors 60+ who have an assessed need, Community Care volunteers will pick up and deliver groceries, medicines, library books and other essentials. To arrange for an intake with a staff member call Prince Edward Community Care at 613-476-7493.
Delivery to the door of nutritious frozen meals for seniors
This program is for all seniors 60+. Delivery of frozen meals can make it easier on those days when meal preparation is difficult. These frozen meals are low sodium, high quality and tasty. They can be heated in a microwave or conventional oven. Prince Edward Community Care offers frozen meals to seniors 60+ who live anywhere in Prince Edward County. Seniors who need help with outside work can call Prince Edward Community Care. The agency has carefully screened workers at reasonable rates. Help is available for outdoor work such as fall clean up, and snow shoveling. Pandemic safety protocols are in place. Telephone Reassurance Program
Prince Edward Community Care has supportive volunteers that can offer companionship, encouragement and warm friendly conversation to seniors to just chat, to help with the uncertainty of the pandemic, provide reassurance, and to help keep people safe. Rural Route Reassurance Program
This free program is available through a partnership with Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Prince Edward Community Care can arrange for your mail courier en route to keep a watchful eye on your home to help keep you safe.
