Armed Forces repatriation ceremony at 8 Wing Trenton

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will pay tribute to their fallen aviators and sailors who perished in the crash of a CH-148 Cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea during a repatriation ceremony at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton, Ontario on Wednesday, May 6.

The crash killed six Canadian Armed Forces members off the coast of Greece. All remains of the fallen have not been recovered. The Cyclone was deployed with the Halifax-based HMCS Fredericton to Europe in January, attached to a NATO maritime force tasked with patrolling the seas.

The repatriation ceremony is to include family members and friends of those missing and presumed dead, including Capt. Brenden Ian MacDonald of New Glasgow, N.S.; Capt. Kevin Hagen of Nanaimo, B.C.; Capt. Maxime Miron-Morin of Trois-Rivieres, Que.; Sub-Lt. Matthew Pyke of Truro, N.S.; and Master Cpl. Matthew Cousins of Guelph.

“We recognize and appreciate the outstanding support of our communities towards the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Major Trevor Reid, 8 Wing Trenton Public Affairs. “Due to the challenges presented by COVID-19 and our requirement to maintain physical distancing for the health and safety of all Canadians, we encourage people to view the ceremony on television or online rather than gathering at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.”

For those who may feel it necessary to have a physical presence at roadside or overpasses along the Highway of Heroes, 8 Wing asks people to respect COVID-19 restrictions and practice physical distancing while paying respects.

“While the Canadian Armed Forces appreciates and recognizes Canadians’ grief and need to mourn at this difficult time, we ask they do so in a way that protects the health and safety of everyone.”

The ceremony will be live-streamed on CAF social media beginning at 2:30pm at http://facebook.com/CanadianForces
