What has more vitamin C than a medium orange, is available right now fresh at Picton Sobeys and could change your love life?

Strawberries of course.

Named as the favourite fruit among 7-to-9 year-olds, strawberries are the tastiest member of the rose family.

As of this past Saturday, Sobeys began selling local strawberries.

“We expect strawberries to last only for the next two weeks,” said Sid Redmond, Produce Manager, Sobeys, Picton. “We had a late frost which will affect the harvest this year. We like to carry the freshest possible produce and support the local farm community,” he said. “It’s good for everybody. The produce isn’t transported half-way across the continent which save energy costs and consumers that live closer to us than to a farm save on gas that way.”

As well as fresh strawberries from Fosterholm he said Sobey’s is also carrying fresh lettuce from Hagerman’s, and peas from Mill Creek Farms.

Sid Redmond has been honoured five times by Foodland Ontario for his displays of Ontario produce. He has been working with produce for 35 years – 10 of them here in Picton.

“I look at produce like art,” he said. “Having the freshest available makes it look  its  best.”

Strawberries do not ripen after they are picked and a perishable. When shopping for strawberries look for firm, plump ones that are the reddest of colour and free of mould. Fresh strawberries will keep in the fridge for a few days.

Strawberries have a long-dated history of medical uses, the Romans for instance used them to alleviate symptoms of fainting, kidney stones, inflammation, diseases of the blood, liver and spleen, throat infections, bad breath, attacks of gout, melancholy and fever. The high content of zinc in strawberries seeds makes strawberries a natural Viagra scientists believe.

Strawberries are grown in every province of Canada and every state in the United States.

NOTE: There will be a Ham and Strawberry Supper Saturday, June 26 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. at the Fosterholm Sap House, Cty Rd. 18 near the Sandbanks entrance. The event is sponsored by the West Lake Church of Christ Ladies Aide. By donation only with all proceeds going to Missions and local charities. Everybody welcome.
