BIA cleans up with County collaboration

A collaboration between the Picton Business Improvement Association and the County of Prince Edward is paying off – for the environment – with the installation of new recycling centres.

“This initiative is three years in the making,” says Barry Braun, PEC’s Commissioner of Recreation, Parks and Culture. “But working in collaboration with the Picton BIA, and the Department of Public Works, the County is doing what it can to encourage recycling in our community.”

Braun notes the containers have been in place for about a month and most people are using them properly, with very little contaminated refuse. The other recycling centres are located at the Royal and Lipson’s Walkways and one is to be placed at the Picton Library once construction is complete.

Robyn Molyneaux, chairperson of the Picton BIA said numerous requests have been make to make the downtown more environmentally-friendly. “One would have thought that installing recycling centres would have been a fairly straightforward process. That however, was not necessarily the case.”

“We were simply not aware of all of the rules governing how a community recycles its waste and the BIA credits the County for its perseverance in meeting those requirements,” says Roni Summers Wickens, BIA Executive Director. “It is a direct result of the commitment by our partners at the County that we have been able to accomplish what we set out to do in downtown Picton.”

The recycling centres are part of the BIA’s downtown revitalization action plan which has seen more than $35,000 invested in recent years (bicycle racks, benches, flower pots, garbage receptacles etc).

“Coupled with the purchase of 20 recycling containers in the County’s parks, Prince Edward is moving this much closer to protecting the environment now, and for the long-term,” adds Summers Wickens.

Re: thefts and vandalism. If we could get more of the local constabulary out of the cruisers and walking a beat in the downtown area, this might help reduce the problems. The local lugans might not be so problematic with a couple of uniforms making the rounds.

well-done BIA. If each of us does just a little more each day to do our part, our downtowns will be incredible….and now if we could only do something about vandalism and thefts downtown.
