Bird watchers invited to flock to the Point

Prince Edward Point assistant birder Janine McManus introduced a young male sharp-shinned hawk to an appreciative crowd visiting the bird observatory banding station.

“We know he’s a young male because he is all brown on his back. As they get older, they start moulting in dark, blue-grey feathers. We also know he’s a young bird because he has a yellow eye. As he gets older it will change to an orange-yellow and eventually in a three or four-year-old bird it will be a dark, dark red.”

McManus also explained the “barring” on the bird’s front, streaking down the breast where as an adult’s markings will go more across and be a reddish colour.

He had already been fitted a band and as he was being set free again, McManus explained to the appreciative crowd at the centre, to watch for him to spread his tail feather wings just as he left her expert hands to head back into the forest.

In a joint effort between PEPtBO (Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory) and Nature Canada, a Migration Matters program is being offered Thanksgiving weekend, and next weekend.

Guided hikes continue Monday, Oct. 12 beginning at 9 a.m. along with a “What’s That Bird?” information session, especially for children, beginning at 11 a.m.

The information session will repeat on Saturdays Oct. 17 and 24 along with “The Big Sit – Raptor Watch” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors are asked to bring a lawn chair and refreshments to enjoy the sightings.

The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory is located in the national wildlife area at the south shore of Prince Edward County.
