Friends of The Bloomfield Branch Library are continue to book interesting coming events – with local authors and a photographer.
The Friends, with grant funding from the Ontario Seniors program, are planning an event for February featuring local authors Ele Pawelski and Ken Murray. On Friday, Feb. 21 from 2 to 3 p.m., they will talk about their books, writing and inspiration. Sharing insight into their creative process and storytelling journey, they will share just how much real life made it into their novels.
Ele’s book, called “The Finest Supermarket in Kabul” is set in Afghanistan in 2011 where three divergent characters end up in the same place at the same time when a suicide bomb detonates. Merza, a new and naïve parliamentarian, receives ominous threats after he wins his seat; Alec, an American journalist looks for a scoop on modern daily life in the ravaged capital; Elyssa, a Canadian human rights worker gets unwanted attention from a powerful male magistrate. These three diverse perspectives collide in the dramatic and savage bombing, and are never the same.
Ken Murray’s book, “Eulogy” tells the story of the controlled and calm life of William Oaks. His life is shattered when his parents die suddenly in a car accident. A reclusive paper conservator at a renowned Toronto museum, William must face the obsessions and denials that have formed him: delusional family history, religious fundamentalism, and get-rich-quick schemes. Memory and facts collide, threatening to derail his life and career as William feverishly prepares for an important exhibition on the Egyptian Book of the Dead.
On March 28 at 2 p.m., photographer Don Kittle is to visit the Bloomfield Branch for a talk entitled “Photography Roots and Tips for Storytelling”. He’s a mostly analogue photographer based in Bloomfield.
“I love photographing people and nature,” he says. “With my passion for stories, I try to learn a bit of your tale and hope to capture that – something go who you are, your personal touch on life.”
At the talk, he will offer tips on portrait photography, and share his experiences working in large format photography including details about working in his darkroom. All are welcome- whether you are an experienced photographer or an iPhone shutterbug, you will be able to pick up tips and ideas from the presentation.
Both of these events are drop-in and all are welcome.
