Brush disposal charge; extra landfill day in effect

A brush disposal charge is now in effect at the Prince Edward County landfill sites to help offset the cost of the service.

The municipality spends between $85,000 and $150,000 each year to chip the brush disposed at three County landfill sites.

To recover a portion of that cost to taxpayers, the municipality has introduced the following fees:
$5 for a van load (larger than passenger car volume)
$10 for a level box load in a pickup truck or similar-sized utility trailer
An additional $5 for overfilled pickups, larger vans, and utility trailers

There is no charge for brush in a passenger car trunk.

Alternatives to disposing of brush at a landfill site include hiring a private operator to chip your brush or burning it on your property. All open air burning requires a permit in Prince Edward County. Permits cost $20 and they are valid until the calendar year they are issued.

Residents must also abide by all burn ban advisories that are in effect. Currently, only small campfires and fires in a container covered by a screen are permitted. The municipality recommends storing the brush until the burn ban is lifted.

The municipality will operate six additional landfill and transfer sites for one extra day between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30 as part of a pilot program.

In addition to the regularly scheduled day on Saturday, the landfill and transfer sites in Hillier, South Marysburgh, Ameliasburgh, Wellington, Hallowell, and Sophiasburgh will be open on Wednesdays between 8 am and 4 pm.

The Picton site will continue to operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Staff will collect data on the pilot program, which will be used to inform a proposal that will go to council during the 2021 budget deliberations.

To limit unnecessary trips to landfill and transfer sites, residents are encouraged to use the curbside collection for garbage, composting, and recycling as much as possible.
