Canada Post grant supports arts and programs for youth at Baxter Centre

Bloomfield’s Baxter Arts Centre will launch free and discounted programs for children and youth thanks to a $17,000 grant from the Canada Post Community Foundation.

The centre’s affordable programming expansion project aimed at children ages nine – 12 and youth is to include free programming in fall and winter sessions as well as discounted summer camps in 2023.

The centre provides year-round programming, inviting local artists and community members to share skills and has been open to the creative community for more than 10 years.

“Baxter hopes to create more accessible programming with the launch of this initiative,” said Gabriele Cole, program manager. “Youth programs will include free transportation and a healthy snack at each class. Our children’s classes will focus on building confidence, introducing new things and making healthy choices. We are particularly looking forward to our recipe building program where children will get the chance to create their own meals.

“For summer 2023, we will also introduce additional summer camps and offer 75 spaces at a 50 per cent discount. In 2022, our summer camps sold out in three hours, with a waitlist of over 50 kids hoping to join us. We hope to expand our offerings so that we can meet the need for summer camps in the community.”

In addition, Cole notes the grant will cover the installation of new track lighting, which will allow Baxter to hold art shows, performances and the like.

“We are beyond delighted to be acknowledged by the Canada Post Community Foundation as a valuable member of the community. This grant will enhance the community centre by providing us with professional lighting, ensuring we can host musicians, and theatrical performances. Our regular life drawing class will also benefit from this improvement.”

Canada Post, in its announcement, stated it is proud to help organizations and projects that make a difference in the lives of Canadian children and youth.
