Celebrants find voices, discover choices

Miss Emily

Applause rang out in thanks for a spirited performance by Emily Fennell, a.k.a. Miss Emily at Friday night’s International Women’s Day celebration.

Prince Edward County residents celebrated achievements of women both locally and globally, at an International Women’s Day event Friday night in the Prince Edward Collegiate auditorium.
“We have plenty to celebrate,” noted Fran Donaldson adding she was pleased to see an increase in attendance,  due to “the younger women joining in with us older ones to expand this event.”

“Find Your Voice – Discover Your Choices is the theme for the evenings’ celebration”, said Ange Stever, IWD committee member.

Following with the intended theme, the evening featured music from Miss Emily (Fennell), Jeanette Arsenault, a women’s drumming circle, poetry readings, local art displays and dance.
Local organizations such as the Recreation Outreach Center and its Girls’ Rock-It program set up information booths to share information about their programs.

The PEC IWD committee also accepted donations for the Picton and Wellington food banks as well as the local Puppets Without Borders project explained in a video presentation by Krista Dalby and Suzanne Larner.

“It was a wonderful turn out and a wonderful energy,” said Lyndsay Richmond, IWD committee chair. “To all the artists, musicians, poets, dancers and volunteers – we simply cannot thank you enough! You all did your part in joining us for the celebration.”

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout the month to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.
