Community grants funding of $511,000 moves forward in County budget

A lengthy discussion about money being spent on community grants resulted in an allocation of $511,000 to be considered in the County’s 2018 budget.

“For me, the most important word is ‘community'” said Mayor Robert Quaiff, during Prince Edward County’s budget talks Tuesday morning. “These are mostly volunteers and are in my opinion, essential services that we use. Every budget we sit here and we debate and raise our voices – all in an effort to save $12,794 in community grants… but when it comes to a couple million dollars in equipment, or roads, or water, I guarantee the debate won’t be as long. For me it’s important to contribute to our community to keep it vibrant.”

Motions by councillors Brad Nieman and Janice Maynard to lower the amount allocated – by 2.5 per cent, and then by a flat $100,000, each failed.

Councillor Gordon Fox noted his understanding was the grants were to be a helping hand as a start up for groups, and that some continue to appear year after year for more funding.

It was noted the Prince Edward Community Foundation, which is paid $10,000 to administer the allocations of the funds, is being careful to better address that issue. Some of the funds – such as $86,000 for recreation committees, $90,000 for Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre, $150,000 for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation and $20,000 for doctor recruitment – have already been committed to by council. The remaining funds will be distributed following applications in January.

The increase from last year’s $503,000 contribution covers assessment growth in the County.
