Community network will help those who go missing

Three out of five people with dementia will go missing and if not found within 24 hours, half of them will have a serious injury or die.

“Dementia does not discriminate, said Barry Flanigan, who looks after education and support services with the Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward County. “Dementia affects men and women of all races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds. There is a little awareness of missing incidents in our communities and many people do not know where to seek help.”

Finding Your WayThe Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward County, in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat is promoting a groundbreaking Finding Your Way  program (www.findingyourwayontario.ca), a multicultural safety awareness initiative to help bring those who have wandered safely home.

Flanigan explains the program is designed to raise awareness of the risk of going missing, help prevent missing incidents and to support the safe return of people who go missing.

A free community meeting is set for Thursday, Nov. 20t at the Royal Canadian Legion, 347 Main Street East, Picton from 9:30 am to 3:30pm. Lunch will be provided, and there is assistance for travel expenses.

“We would like to discuss how we can all play a partnership role in building a stronger community network to help prevent missing incidents, and prepare for such incidents if they occur. Together, we will look at the local community picture to raise awareness and enhance community response to missing incidents; share successes and challenges, resources and tools, determine a local action plan and advise on the future development of the Finding Your Way program.
