Community partners helping others get excited about reading

At the library we truly believe that reading is worth getting excited about, and we’re so grateful to our community partners that help us achieve this goal.

As part of our commitment to celebrating reading, we’re thrilled to share that the fifth annual Reading Roundup at Macaulay Village Park on London Avenue in Picton is set for Thursday, July 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. This event includes the County Kids Read, the Macaulay Village Neighhbourhood Group, the Library, the Learning Centre and more. This annual event provides a great opportunity for people to learn about community resources and come together for food and friendship. This year, Giant Tiger Picton has generously donated food and we hear that the Tiger might even make an appearance.

The library will bring its “Musical Wall”, a collection of pots and pans and more we use to create a large percussion instrument – always a popular attraction, as well as information about becoming a library member, the 1000 Books (or more) before Kindergarten Program and more. We’ll also bring some musical instruments from the lending library, which people can experiment with and enjoy.

Thanks to a longstanding partnership with Community Care for Seniors, the library is able to provide home delivery of library materials to patrons who cannot get in to the library. Sometimes this is a long-term service, and sometimes it’s due to a short-term issue such as recovering from surgery or injury.

Through this program, the library selects books, DVDs and other materials for patrons, and trained and vetted Community Care volunteers deliver. This would not be possible without these volunteers, and it’s an invaluable service to readers who often express how much they rely on library materials to stay informed, entertained, and educated. Materials are available in a variety of formats – large print, audiobook, ebooks, and more, to help increase accessibility and to ensure that everyone can find just the right book.

Our congratulations to Community Care for Seniors on its recent good news about opening a new County Seniors’ Centre on King Street in Picton which will help older adults live well at home, stay active, and remain connected to their community.
Thanks, as well, to the volunteers who deliver materials to residents at nursing, retirement and long-term care homes as well as the activity co-ordinators who help us get the books to the right people.

We are thrilled to work with a wide range of people and groups who share our dedication to supporting a connected and curious community, and to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to discover the library and the joys of reading.
