Consecon in high spirits for community day

It was the hottest, most humid day of the year and shade was at a premium, but 32 racers competed at the Consecon Community Day Soap Box Derby last weekend.
While most competitiors were local, last year’s champ Madison Robowtham retained her championship this year.
“The family came back into the County from Toronto just so she could run the race,” notes organizer Bill McMahon. “They left her cart at the Baldwin farm here in Consecon before going into Toronto for the week. Also we had the Walters family from North Gower in the Ottawa area who were at the Sandbanks over the weekend but brought the car along for their girls Erica and Sarasa.”

“The weather was a bit warm, but not as warm as the Consecon community spirit,” commented Ameliasburgh councillor Nick Nowitski. “This was evident by the numerous yard sales through out the village and the record number of participants (both young and young at heart) racing the clock in the soapbox carts. A packed Legion Hall and patio provided enough room for all to enjoy the barbecued pig, sides and desserts. After dinner, ‘Whisky Overdrive’ had the Consecon downtown area swinging and swaying to their rock and country tunes for hours.”

The day was organized by the Consecon and Area Ratepayers Association Inc (CARA) and many volunteers, as well as sponsors Ameliasburgh REC Committee, local businesses and area campgrounds.
