The Prince Edward County Soccer Association will be moving forward with plans to build replace a shed with council approval Tuesday night to be a project of community interest, which allows receipts to be given for donations. Council also approved the use of security cameras at the shed to deter vandalism.
In their deputation, David Walcott and Scott Wentworth, of the association, stated the $200,000 project requires no municipal funding, and it is hoped it can be started in the fall. The potential for future partnering opportunities with the County are to be explored.
Previously part of the MacSteven’s Farm, the shed’s location is adjacent to PECI on the edge of the Johnson Street soccer fields.
Walcott explained the current shed is rotten, infested with squirrels and stands in a depression that floods regularly. The main waterline often freezes. Purposes of a new shed, with an agricultural inspiration design, would include storage for equipment, supplies, use as a concession stand, updated irrigation controls and an adjacent washrooms.
The PECSA started in 1999 with one team and today supports 995 participants – 863 youth and 132 adults – on 71 teams playing games four nights a week.
