County receives good news on funding

Prince Edward County’s mayor was pleased to share some good news received from the County’s official new CAO James Hepburn.

Hepburn informed the mayor the 2016 Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) allocation for the County is $2,650,700 – an $82,100 increase over 2015.

OMPF is the province’s main transfer payment to municipalities. The County’s combined benefit of the 2016 OMPF and the provincial uploads totals $6,577,000 – the equivalent of 22 per cent of the County’s municipal tax revenue.

The majority of the increased 2016 funding for the County is a result of increased per household funding for the new Northern and Rural Fiscal Circumstances Grant component. The province enhanced this funding for municipalities with the highest levels of farm land in recognition of unique challenges.

Wow! If you took last year’s amount ($2,658,600) and added 1% for inflation ($ 26,600) the “real” dollar increase is about $55,000 or about 0.5 % of a tax decrease.
If the Province paid actual taxes, at the rate that you and I do, on the MPAC assessed value of it’s land ,waterfront and Commercial( campground) holdings in this County, that $6,577,000 would increase dramaticaly.
Todd Smith: stand up in the legislature and call The Liberals out ! Perhaps not, because the Conservatives may form the Government some day and then they would be called upon to fix this rip off?

This is good for the County, but let’s not forget: a tax dollar by any other name is still a tax dollar – our tax dollars.

  3. Dave says:

This grant will help pay for the OMB hearing about the size of council
