County resolving issue of excess soil on Millennium Trail

The County of Prince Edward and its contractor will reduce the elevation of the Millennium Trail between Wharf and Maple streets in Wellington.

Some of the excess soil from the Wellington trunk watermain and sanitary sewer project was reused on that section of the trail. However, the municipality has stated the trail was constructed at a substantially higher elevation than planned in the approved design.

To rectify the situation, the municipality will remove more than half of the existing soil. This change will result in a maximum embankment height of approximately 750 mm (30 inches) with 3:1 (horizontal to vertical) side slopes, to significantly improve the final trail profile.

The trail between Wharf and Maple streets will be graded to create a more gradual transition that is less noticeable to trail users while maintaining accessibility. Grading transitions will be limited to a maximum grade of 2.5 per cent, which is half of the maximum 5 per cent grade permitted under accessibility standards.

Some soil will be used in a low area near Cleminson Street. Placing material in this location will level the existing trail profile rather than create a raised embankment.

Work to restore this section of the trail is currently underway.

Any remaining material that cannot be reused on-site will be transported to the contractor’s stockpile area while staff continue to evaluate other suitable reuse opportunities along the Millennium Trail. If no appropriate reuse location is identified, the remaining material will be transported to a private designated reuse facility.
