County students honoured at Albert College convocation

Thirty-four students representing nine countries including Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East graduated from Albert College during the 159th Convocation on Saturday. Five local graduates have brought home top awards to Prince Edward County.

Eighty-five per cent of the graduating class received Ontario Scholar status having achieved an average of 80 per cent or higher in six Grade 12 subjects. Eleven graduates were also Albert College Scholars, having achieved an average of 90 per cent or higher in six Grade 12 subjects. In addition, 13 students graduated with distinction, having achieved an average of 80 per cent or more and excelling in Albert College’s five ‘A’s (Academics, Athletics, Arts, Active Citizenship and Adventure), a prestigious title. One hundred per cent of the graduating class is pursuing a post-secondary education.

Alyson James graduated with distinction, as an Ontario Scholar and an Albert College Scholar earning an average of 90 per cent or higher in six of her Grade 12 subjects. She received subject Awards for Canadian and World Politics and Dramatic Arts. She also received The Sidney Watson ’37 Memorial Award for History and the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award Scholarship for demonstrating a strong commitment to academics while being actively involved in all areas of the school. Ally represented the school as a Prefect this year, the school’s highest leadership position, and played the lead role in last year’s production of Hairspray and ‘Lady Catherine’ in Pride and Prejudice this year. She will study a Bachelor of Creative Industries at Ryerson University.

Nathan Busscher has attended Albert College for six years and has enjoyed participating in house league events, playing on various sports teams and travelling to Tanzania this year with the Active Citizenship trip. Nathan has followed in his father’s footsteps as Mark is an alumnus of Albert College, class of 1988. Nathan will study Civil Engineering Technology at St. Lawrence College.

Abigail James graduated with distinction and as an Ontario and Albert College Scholar. She received the top female award, The Howard Award, for finest female student in the graduating class. Abigail has attended Albert College since Grade 4. In her nine years at Albert College, she has been involved in all areas of school life. She has enjoyed participating on both varsity and recreational sports teams including field hockey, soccer, tennis, and squash. She has also completed over 140 hours of community service. Her adventures at the school have taken her on canoe trips, a dog sledding trip and an Active Citizenship trip to Ghana. Her artistic contributions include multiple theatrical productions, concert band, the chapel choir and the women’s choir. Academically, she has maintained her spot on the Outstanding Learning Skills List and the Honour Roll year after year, has received the Annual Public Speaking Award more than once and received subject awards in French and English. As both the Head Prefect this year, Abbey has been an exemplary role model in the highest leadership role at the school. Abbey is following in her grandfather’s footsteps who is an alumnus of the school graduating with the class of 1946. Abbey will study an Honours Bachelor of Arts at Queen’s University.

The Class of ’66 Trophy for Most Outstanding Female Athlete was presented to Kate Moodey. Kate graduated as an Ontario scholar and she has been a student at Albert College for 10 years. She was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) on the soccer and cross country teams this year. She also participated in the Metro Championships in Toronto in long jump for track and field. She is a leader on the soccer field and is encouraging and supportive of her teammates. Kate is also a strong student in Arts, with some of her fondest memories including the dramatic and instrumental music productions. Kate plays the flute and portrayed the role of ‘Jane Bennet’ in this year’s dramatic production of Pride and Prejudice. Kate will study a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Guelph.

Abigail Couture received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Volunteer Award for demonstrating exemplary community involvement and the Albert College Parent Guild Scholarship for significant personal growth and an increased understanding of the meaning of responsibility in and to the school community. Abby was also the recipient of a subject award in Philosophy. Abby has been a student at Albert for six years and graduated with distinction, as an Ontario and Albert College Scholar earning an average of 90 per cent or higher in six of his grade 12 subjects. Serving in the school’s highest leadership position, Abby was the Active Citizenship Prefect this year. Abigail will study an Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science at McGill University.
