County to remove flood debris bins after Labour Day

Collection bins for sandbags and flood-related debris will be removed after Labour Day from the following locations:
Consecon – Old Fire Hall
End of Hiscock Shores Road
Rossmore – Ridley Street
End of Sunrise Drive
Prinyers Cove Park
Northport – Northport Centennial Park

Sandbags and debris that washed up on the shore during the spring flooding such as driftwood, brush, broken or damaged docks, rafts, or rope can be deposited in these bins until Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Construction-related debris must be taken to a County landfill/transfer site. This includes material removed from structures that were damaged, including drywall, building supports such as 2x4s, or plywood, as well as any debris left over from repairs made to flood-damaged structures. Damaged household furniture and flooring should also be taken to a landfill/transfer site.

After the bins are removed, residents must take their debris to a County landfill/transfer station site. Regular fees and charges will apply.

Sandbag bins in Ameliasburgh (15 Coleman Street), Picton (115 Lake Street), and Wellington (111 Belleville Street) will remain in place until further notice. The County reminds residents they can deposit both the bags and the sand in these bins.

It is advised to remove sandbags as they will rot and breakdown over time. Loose or leaking sand near the shoreline can negatively impact streams, wetlands, and storm drains.

The sand should not be disposed of in a wetland, waterway, floodplain, or other environmentally sensitive or protected area. Do not dispose of the sand in areas where it will be on the ground surface or come into direct contact with people, such as in a sandbox or playground.
