County will seek city relationship with a Ukraine community

In a symbol of solidarity, Prince Edward County will seek a  city relationship with a Ukraine community to exchange information, provide support and to assist in its recovery as the one year anniversary of Russia’s attacks on the country approaches Feb. 24.

Mayor Steve Ferguson and councillor Bill Roberts proposed the resolution at Tuesday night’s council meeting and also received unanimous support to raise the Ukrainain flag again at Shire Hall as the country continues to face unprecedented attacks on its sovereignty and way of life. The last sitting council agreed to fly the flag until the end of its term in November 2022.

The current council agrees to demonstrate its support by raising the Ukrainian flag at Shire Hall until the end of its term, or until hostilities cease.

In July 20219, council and staff, in conjunction with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), welcomed Ukrainian municipal leaders here to exchange information and ideas about their respective communities and governance models. It is hoped the identified twin community would have a connection to that delegation.

Staff will bring forward a report that outlines the process, timeline and any costs association with initiating a twinning or other arrangement.
