Two years of restoration work is well under way for Picton’s historic Royal Hotel including the brickwork, wood cornice and installation of new windows. The hotel was constructed circa 1881. It has been vacant for many years, resulting in significant deterioration. Character defining elements too severely deteriorated to repair are being replaced with new elements that match the forms, materials and detailing. – John Ferguson photo

Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory celebrated Earth Day this year by launching its new Birding Map of the County. The map identifies and describes 18 birding sites in the County in both of Canada’s official languages. It is in a compact folded format that allows for easy transport in a pocket or back pack. Former residents of 12 former developmental services facilities – including Prince Edward Heights, at Picton – will be able to apply for compensation. The Superior Court of Justice approved a $36 million settlement agreement that will provide compensation to individuals who suffered harm while living at 12 former developmental services facilities between the 1960s and 1990s.

The generosity of the County community continues, this time for the MacSteven Dialysis Clinic located in the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. Recently the hospital foundation, through donations directed to the Dialysis Clinic, helped offset the cost of a handheld ultrasound machine with a gift of $7,210.

On Monday, April 4, 2016 White Pines Wind Inc (wpd) began clearing trees at sites for the 27-turbine project on the south shore of Prince Edward County. A motion to stay construction was granted, in part. The Environmental Review Tribunal ordered that vegetation clearing and site preparation activities associated with the project in areas identified as Blanding’s turtle spring foraging habitat in the Stantec Species at Risk Report of 2012 are stayed pending the resolution of appeals. – APPEC photo

Enthusiasm to support the fight against childhood cancer rang out Monday as police officers cycled into Prince Edward County on opening day of the fifth annual Pedal for Hope campaign. Kim Guthrie and Troy Bellehumeur, from Prince Edward OPP, and officers from Belleville Police Service, cruised into the County on a chilly, and sometimes snowy first leg of the journey.

Students in the Environmental Club at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute filled a transport trailer with electronic waste set up behind the school. Community members who dropped off unwanted, outdated or broken electronics waste, old tires and scrap metal free of charge, were invited to offer donations for the Loyalist Humane Society.

PECI’s drama students presented statements on family and long-term effects in the theatrical production of ‘Mirror Game’.

The first sale at Picton’s brand new LCBO was a six pack and two coolers, but the County wines, ciders, spirits and other favourites were quick to start flowing along packed check-out lines.

County Road 49, Prince Edward County reached number one in the CAA’s annual ‘Worst Roads in Ontario’ campaign . Voting continued through April and the designation remained.

Applause, cheers and a standing ovation marked Rebecca MacKellar’s achievement of 10,000 volunteer hours donated to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Overwhelmed by the honour, she chose not to give an address, but said thank you to her peers attending the organization’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea in Wellington.

Writer and former CBC host Bill Richardson had more than 100 County Authors Festival attendees in stitches as he read from his new book of poems about the indignities of aging. ‘The First Little Bastard to Call Me Gramps: Poems of the Late Middle Ages’, looks at the tarnish on the golden years and brought bursts of laughter from his audience.

Prince Edward County residents were honoured Wednesday for their volunteer efforts, visions and community spirit. The Wellings of Picton adult lifestyle community hosted its first volunteer awards ceremony honouring 17 nominees and presenting winners of three categories with $500 to be given to a charity of choice.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for Picton Main Street’s construction also launched the Picton BIA’s “Main Street Makeover” campaign. The project involves replacement of water mains and sewer services, new sidewalks, curbs, lighting and crosswalks. Shops remain open and pedestrian traffic will be allowed.

Music fans and movie lovers were part of a full house crowd at the Regent Theatre Sunday for a PEC Syria fundraiser supporting the resettlement of Syrian families in the area. ‘Song for Syria’ featured a live concert and documentary film screening, both thematically centred on giving women a voice.
