Cyclists enjoy fragrant fundraiser in the County

Close to 100 cyclists took in the sights – and smells – of Prince Edward County as they toured the island in the annual Picton Rotary Club Lilac Ride.
“The event day was very warm and humid, and although the event day registrations for the ride were down – I think because of the really hot weather forecast – registered riders enthusiastically participated on the three marked road courses – 27, 57 and 100 km,” said ride chairman Jim Barkman.
Riders started at the Prince Edward Community Centre Rotary Hall at three times – 9a.m., 9:30 and 10 am behind a convertible pace car. Following the ride, a barbecue lunch was served.
Proceeds (not yet calculated) from the event will be directed toward literacy programs in Prince Edward County.
“The riders expressed many great comments about the organized event, the Prince Edward Community Center Rotary Hall venue and the marked courses,” said Barkman, and noted the scenery as lilacs were in view on most areas. He noted they also praised the volunteers, the food, and the overall experience.
“Many intend to come back next year with a few friends.”
