The PEC Trails Committee invites volunteers, ambassadors, donors, advocates and supporters to a “long over-due” celebration of the revitalization of the Millennium Trail.
It was February 2017 when the Trails Committee and the municipality announced plans to upgrade 46km of the linear park and natural corridor for native plants, trees and a variety of wildlife.
It has since been converted into a multi-use recreational feature for the enjoyment of County residents and visitors for walking, for snowmobilers, hikers, cyclists, ATV riders and cross country skiers.
The 53km Millennium Trail follows a re-purposed abandoned rail line acquired by the County from Canadian National Railway in 1997. It begins at Fort Kente Road near Carrying Place, travelling roughly parallel to the Loyalist Parkway crossing Consecon Lake, through wetlands near Hillier, continuing close by the centres of Wellington and Bloomfield, with two termination points in Picton – downtown at Lake Street by the LCBO and north of Picton at Hwy. 49 near White Chapel Road.
“It’s been a long journey, with many hurdles and successes over the last six years,” states the invitation. “And although we are not quite ready to say it’s completely finished, we see the need to recognize and celebrate the huge success it has been.”
The success is due to hundreds of community members who stepped ups as volunteers, ambassadors, donors, advocates and supporters along the way.
The PEC Trails Committee is expressing gratitude by hosting a celebration Thursday, May 2 at the Wellington District Community Centre. Weather dependent, it will lead a casual/optional trail ride and walk leaving from the Belleville Street intersection of the trail and heading east, at 3 p.m.
Both groups are expected to return to the community centre for 4:30 p.m. to enjoy light refreshments, then presentations at 5 p.m. in the Highline Hall.
The PEC Trails Committee and special guests are speaking to the history of the trail, progress to date and what’s yet to come.
