Emergency response at Mountainview ‘outstanding’

An F18 airplane crash and a three-vehicle collision at Canadian Forces Detachment Mountainview Wednesday morning tested emergency response skills and collaboration with various agencies in the Quinte area.
Participants in the ‘County Union’ exercise included the Prince Edward County fire department, paramedics, Quinte Healthcare and Ontario Provincial Police working with various units from 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.
Exercise County Union is a six-month process to examine the wing’s response, said Capt. Konrad Ostner, the exercise’s co-ordinator and emergency training officer at 8 Wing. “There were nine casualties… We tried to make it as realistic as possible.”
Ostner said the response was “outstanding”.
“The firefighters got here right away and started working with the casualties. There are some issues with the F18 because of the type of material it had on board so thee military and emergency services arrived and they had to be very careful with that.
“I thank the community for its patience. Unfortunately there was a big lineup of cars but people were very patient. I hope they understand that the base has to practices these exercises to get better in responding and that there will be delays. The community was very accommodating.”
