Canada Day saw more people celebrating than last year, which Sarah Doiron, manager of Experience Picton, attributes to both the cooler weather and new events.

“I’ve seen what looks like at least double the attendance this year over last, and most of that I attribute to the weather. This year isn’t nearly as hot. But we’ve also been pushing all the cool new elements that we have on Main Street this year, and people have really been responding to it,” she said.

The Experience Picton team put an emphasis on family-friendly activities this year with a fun, carnival twist. Folks could enjoy a balloon artist and airbrush tattoo artist who were in a family shade tent, which provided relief from sun and heat.

Along Main Street, there were several pop-up shops and food vendors to peruse. Kids and adults were kept busy with a Drag Race event, featuring adult-sized tricycles, as well as a giant maze. A party train also took children and adults from end to end of Main Street.

Benson Park was a sea of red and white while kids enjoyed Boxtopia – an art instalment created by the Department of Illusion.

More than 30 people also participated in Tai Chi that was held in the park.

Instant Rivalry’s Megan Hutton started the day off singing the national anthem, which was followed by a short and sweet speech by County mayor Steve Ferguson.

“It’s a pleasure to be here. We are so proud to call the County ‘home,’ so I’d like to welcome everybody. I hope you all have a terrific time on Main Street, taking advantage of the activities, the food, the restaurants, the art show and everything that the County has to offer. Happy Canada Day.”

Mike Campbell of Argyll Engraving said he had a lot of people visiting their booth to check out the Canadian-inspired glassware and items. Campbell also sits on the Experience Picton Board of Directors and said the team is grateful for all who came out.

“We really wanted to go for a carnival, family-filled atmosphere. We’ve seen a lot of people so far. I love the concept of the Main Street being closed so it’s all pedestrian traffic,” he said.

Live music continued throughout the afternoon on the main stage, including Grace Bongard, The Kitchen Family, Instant Rivalry, The Frere Brothers and William Elvis Young – Elvis tribute artist.

The day’s celebrations ended with bursts of fireworks.
