A family of four was able to get out safely before their home was destroyed by fire early this afternoon.
Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue received multiple 911 calls to respond to a house fire on Victoria Road at 12:48 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputy Fire Chief Tim Kraemer reports the house was fully ablaze when crews arrived. The family, he said, was being looked after by Victim Services – which offers immediate on-site crisis, trauma, safety and support services to victims of crime and sudden tragedies.
“The house was fully engulfed. Firefighters had to take defensive action immediately. There was no way they would have been able to get inside the house,” Kraemer said, adding an excavator was also called to the scene to help knock down the roof.
The house sustained significant damage and the loss is estimated at $750,000.
There were no injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the evening watching for hot spots.
