Almost every seat was filled, and more spilled onto the grounds, to hear The King croon under the tent at the Waupoos Winery Annual Elvis Festival.
Opening night included Belleville’s Matt Cage, fresh from winning the Inspirational Elvis contest, and placing second in the Professional Concert Years (jumpsuit division) at Collingwood’s Elvis Festival last weekend. More than 100 impersonators compete at the event, dubbed the world’s largest, and endorsed by Graceland and Pricilla Presley.
Also performing was Zach Peddie, who won second place in Collingwoods’s Professional Early Years contest. The 18-year-old won the hearts of his audience in Waupoos dedicating a song to his ever-supportive grandmother who attends every show she can.
The festival continues Saturday with two shows – at 11:30 a.m. with an Elvis-inspired menu and performances starting at 1 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. for dinner with the performance starting at 6 p.m. Impersonator Gino Monopoli will join Cage and Peddie at the shows.
Entry to the festival is free of charge. Preferred seating available under the tent with an Elvis Inspired meal purchase. The offerings under the tent include southern fried chicken, smoked beef brisket and combos. Outside of the tent (bring your own lawn chairs), there are burgers, hot dogs, pizza, fries and pop.
Next year will be the 40th year since Elvis Presley’s death. Born in 1935, he is considered the King of Rock and Roll and one of the most culturally significant icons of the 20th century. He died in August, 1977.
The Waupoos Estates Winery and Gazebo Restaurant is located at 3016 Cty Rd 8, Waupoos.
