Fire caused an estimated $150,000 damage to an Elm Street Picton multi-family home early Tuesday morning.
Prince Edward County Deputy Fire Chief Robert Rutter said Picton firefighters answered the call at about 7:30 a.m. and heavy fire was visible from the second storey at the rear of the building.
“Because of the age and type of structure, the fire was travelling quickly so we brought Hallowell firefighters in to help and had it under control within an hour.”
The cause of the fire is suspected accidental and left heavy damage to the east side of the building.Three families are without a home. The Salvation Army and Social Services arrived on the scene immediately to see where they could offer assistance and help look after immediate needs such as diapers and child car seats.
