Fishing season opens with high hopes to catch big prizes – LIVE LEADERBOARD

In honour of the opening of fishing season, the Prince Edward County Museums Facebook shared this marvellous vintage postcard to mark the occasion. The museums’ season opens May long weekend. Watch for details. Some things never change?

The opening weekend of fishing season expects to see more than 4,000 anglers cast for the chance to win prizes in the annual Walleye World Fishing Derby.

At one minute into Saturday morning morning, pike and pickerel season and the 36th annual derby hosted by local Kiwanis clubs are officially open.

Fish to beat from last year are a 12.88 pound walleye winning a boat, motor trailer and accessories valued at $22,000. The largest Pike weighed in at 15.4 pounds also won a boat, motor, trailer and accessories, valued at $7,899.

Derby fishing closes at 4p.m. Sunday afternoon with prizes and awards to follow at the Derby Headquarters, Centennial Park, Trenton.
