Free classes to help understand ‘digital’ literacy

Christine Renaud

Digital literacy, the ability to use and understand technology and programs including cloud-based apps and social media, can be challenging. One of the easiest and most fun ways to learn, however, is to apply the tools available to a real life project.

The Prince Edward Learning Centre’s is hosting a new Digital Literacy Summer School.

“We’re excited to offer two courses this summer as part of our larger Digital Literacy initiative,” said Kathy Kennedy, Prince Edward Learning Centre Executive Director. “Whether someone would like to plan a family reunion, a street party, a gigantic yard sale, a work event, or just a “dream” event for later, the Awesome Events course will help incorporate tech and apps to help make that happen while becoming comfortable with working online.”

During the month of July, participants will be use e-mail programs to manage guest lists, learn how to make posters and advertising materials, and use social media to promote their event.

The second course, Preserving Memories with Digital Scrapbooking, will be offered in August. Using their own photos and journaling, participants will use apps to upload those photos and add text to create their own printed hardcover book.

“With so many of us using our phones to take photos, it’s easy to accumulate hundreds of them and never have printed copies,” says Lori Farrington, PELC’s Program Coordinator. “And creating a scrapbook with online tools is a great way to organize photos and create a meaningful record of life events.”

Classes will be held at Prince Edward Learning Centre in the Sobey’s Plaza in Picton from 4pm to 7pm Mondays and Tuesdays throughout each month. There is no cost and a light dinner will be served.

Registration is required. For more information, contact Lori Farrington at 613-476-1811 or Christine Renaud by e-mail at: christiner@pelc.ca
