Furay national champs qualify for Worlds

County women helped bring home the gold as winners of the Canadian National Women’s D Slo-Pitch championship held on the holiday weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick.
The Furay team defeated Newfoundland 19-8 in the championship game. The County team members included Meloni Horton (MVP), Carrie Dyer, Ginny Insley and Chrystal York, team captain (who had to miss this game as she was playing in the fast pitch provincials).
Coach Ray Jeffrey explains that after placing 6th in the 2008 Canadian National Slo-Pitch Championships in Winnipeg, Furay  traveled to Moncton N.B to try their skill again at the 2010 Canadian Championships against 16 teams vying for the title.
Opening up against the Gagetown Lightning out of N.B, Furay jumped out early then coasted to a 9-2 victory. Next up was the Mudflats out of N.S and Furay’s attack didn’t let up and destroyed them 12-2. The Quebec Avalanche proved to be their toughest competition on Saturday, but Furay survived a late rally and hung on to win 15-11. Wrapping up the round robin against K.O.S out of Nova Scotia, the K.O.S team had no answer for Furay’s offence and Furay won 19-6. After finishing in the top spot in their pool, Furay faced off against the Knight Kare Diamond Diva’s out of N.S on Sunday morning and continuing on with their explosive attack Furay cruised to a 8-3 win. Sunday afternoon Furay was pitted against Gualterri Farms a young team out of Windsor and with Furay’s best defensive display of the tournament crushed the Windsor team 9-0 sending Furay to the semi’s against the only other undefeated team Roebotham, Mckay & Marshall out of Newfoundland. The winner of that game earned a spot in the finals with their double knock out still intact. After jumping out to 6-0 lead Furay never looked back and outpaced the N.L team the rest of the way winning 18-6. The N.L team had to beat a tough Quebec  team to earn a second chance at Furay. Furay once again jumped out to a early lead ,but this time N.L had more fight left in them scoring 4 runs in the fourth inning and 4 more in the fifth to close within one run. That was the closest they would come as Furay’s bats exploded for ten runs in the 6th and 7th inning giving FURAY their first Canadian National Championship in the Women’s “D” division with a 19-8 win. Congratulations to all team members, they never trailed once in the tournament and outscored their opponents  109 -38 for a perfect 8-0 record. Special thanks goes out to team sponsors Scott Reid’s Water Haulage,Bay of Quinte Movers and C. Smith Bus Lines with their driver Wally Vestervelt  supplying the transportation to Moncton. Furay has now qualified for the Worlds in either Florida or Arizona in February and are looking for Both major and minor sponsors to help get them there.
