GIS mapping coming to County website

Starting Dec. 20, the public will be able to obtain a range of property-based information from the County website with the new  Geographic Information System (GIS).
GIS is a commonly used tool by municipalities to tie together information based on geographic location for the purpose of query, analysis and generation of maps and reports. GIS provides a means to share data and a method of visualizing geographic-related problems and solutions. The aim is that better information leads to better decisions, and subsequently, better customer service.
“In 2009 a GIS analysis project was undertaken to inventory and better understand the many types of municipal information and their associated data bases,” said Mayor Peter Mertens. “It identified a host of material related to individual properties such as zoning and other designations, natural features, property configurations, roads, services and infrastructure. The information identified was not readily available or easily accessible by all departments or the public.”
A Request for Proposal led to the selection of a preferred vendor to link, organize and manage the data. The project was approved in November of 2009 and the
implementation plan set out the priority data for inclusion in the initial release. Information will expand as the project continues to develop.
“GIS is a good example of how we use technology to provide better and faster access to municipal information,” said Mertens. “It’s a valuable tool to improve the way we do business and I look forward to its ongoing development.”
The GIS system will be available on the home page of the County website www.pecounty.on.ca. It includes an on-line tutorial, the ability to create, download, save and annotate individual maps with desired information.
