Golden relay finishes for Picton’s David Mayer

Picton's David Mayer a blur as he takes the baton from Kevin Montgomery, also from Prince Edward County. The athletes raced relay events at the Ontario University Athletics Provincial Meet at York University.

Picton’s David Mayer raced to two gold finishes as the best track and field student athletes from across the province competed at York University for the 2011 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Track and Field Championships Feb. 25-26.
Mayer teamed up with Ingvar Moseley of Pickering, Ont., Olu Ogunde of Lagos, Nigeria, and Dontae Richards-Kwok, of Mississauga to win the gold medal in the 4 x 200m relay, and later in the day ran the anchor leg for the gold-medal winning Lions in the 4 x 400m relay. Joining him on that team were Moseley, Mayer and Birko Mertinat of Toronto. The wins gave them second and third place Canadian rankings.
The event proved to be a thrilling finish to the competition as the final race of the day. At the half-way point the Lions ran on par with both Queen’s and Windsor, and heading into the final exchange Windsor runner Jordan Langridge of Wooler, Ont., edged ahead of Mayer. However, Richards-Kwok exploded from the line after the final handoff and drew well ahead Lancer Dustin Eldridge of Whitby, Ont., on the first turn. Eldridge nearly chased Richards-Kwok down by the finish line, with the Lions ultimately claiming victory by just .16.
Mayer, with Kevin Montgomery, of Picton, Ryan Charlton and Ethan Henry also placed fifth in the 4 x 800, landing a 10th place Canadian ranking.
Gold and silver medalists advance to the national meet.
David Mayer and Kevin Montgomery are attending the York Kinesiology Program, Kevin studying the Athletic Therapist program and David plans to attend teacher’s college.
