Grocery shoppers at Picton’s Metro store are backing the build of the County’s new hospital – $2 at a time.

Shoppers have contributed almost $7,000 in the first week of a two-week fundraiser helping the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Back the Build campaign.

Customers are asked to donate $2 at check out and in the first week, contributed $6,820. The promotion runs until Thursday, Aug. 13.

“We could not achieve our goal of building a new hospital for the residents and visitors of Prince Edward County without support from the community and corporate partners like Metro,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “We are honoured to have the support of the hard working staff and loyal customers at Metro in Picton.”

As frontline workers themselves, Metro was thrilled to partner with the foundation for the fundraiser that engages both local residents and visitors to Prince Edward County.

“Our frontline employees make us extremely proud and during these challenging times, they have chosen to keep on providing for the community,” said Murray Lupenette, store manager of Picton Metro. “Raising money to support the building of our new hospital is a meaningful way to recognize and thank other frontline employees at the hospital. We are grateful to all the patrons who have supported this effort. We are blown away by the support shown during the first week and will work hard to make the second week even more of a success.”

“Metro continues to go above and beyond to help our community and residents,” said Nancy Parks, Back the Build campaign co-chair. “Thank you to everyone at Metro for your continued support and enthusiasm. You are incredible leaders in our community.”

Based on current projected timelines, the new hospital construction would be completed in 2025. The PECMH Foundation is commissioned with raising the local share portion of the build, which works out to be $16.5M. Community donations so far total more than $11.3 million in pledges.

In June, Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith delivered long-awaited official confirmation the hospital will be built.

Now on Stage 3 of 5, Quinte Health Care is working on detailed planning and design work for the new hospital which is to include 18 in-patient beds with space for five additional beds, a 24-7 emergency department, diagnostic imaging, surgical suite, dialysis and ambulatory care.
