Group of eight anglers rescued from unsafe ice

Prince Edward County OPP and Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue rescued a group of eight people stranded on ice while fishing in the Bay of Quinte north of Big Island on Thursday.

Constable Aaron Miller reports they were all successfully brought safely back to shore.

“While the ice may look tempting for ice fishing, skating, walking or other activities, please do not trust the ice,” he said. “The temperatures have been erratic this winter and much of the ice is not thick enough to safely support people. Don’t put your own life, and the lives of first responders at risk.”

He notes that for anyone who must venture out, proper use of safety equipment can reduce the risks of travelling over ice covered bodies of water. Possibilities include: wearing survival suits, carrying picks (used to grip ice to pull yourself out of the water) and carrying a rescue rope.

However, “no ice is safe ice”.
