A new home for a County family will represent a fresh start and a place where they can make plans for their future.

Connie Matthews is a single parent with two children – Cole, 12 and Hannah, who will be 10 this week. After years of living in cramped rental housing, Connie never dreamed she would be able to own her own home.

Today, Habitat for Humanity announced the Matthews family has been selected to live at the new build on York Street in Picton.

“There is no more deserving family than this one,” said Len Kennedy, executive director. “They need this fresh start in life to move forward. We are excited for the three of them with this opportunity for  new beginnings and a helping hand from Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings.”

Connie was overwhelmed with excitement.

“I am so thrilled to start this new chapter in our lives. It means so much to me and the children to have a place to call our own,” she said.

The Matthews home will be located at 7 York Street Picton, on a lot donated to Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings from the town of Picton. This is Habitat’s third build and fourth home in Picton since 2005.

Habitat provides affordable model homes to families selected from applicants based on their ability to commit to 500 hours of sweat equity and make mortgage payments geared to family income. Habitat mortgages require no down payment and are interest free.

Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings is recruiting volunteers – individuals, groups, organizations and others to assist with the Picton build in a variety of roles from construction to general labourers, from fundraising to food and hospitality.
