Hickory shaft golfers help Picton club celebrate

The Picton Golf & Country Club will celebrate the 50th anniversary of “the old nine” and more than 100 years of existence on Saturday, August 6th.

The golf portion of the day will itself be worth the price of admission. The main event will be a shotgun four-person team scramble.
On course, theme driven events will feature a “closest to the object” competition using wooden headed drivers or fairway woods.  The prize for the winner is a beautiful leather Sunday bag.  Two of the par 3 holes will spotlight local wineries with wine tasting and a case of wine to the winner of that closest to the pin challenge.

A group of Hickory shaft golfers, sporting period dress, will be in attendance, including Kingston’s own Bobby Sly, current US Open Hickory Shaft champion.  Also attending will be Joe McLean of Flagstick Magazine and the Canadian Historical Golf Association.  Joe will bring a supply of hickory putters to be used in the pre-event hickory putter testing.  Funds raised from this challenge will go to support the club’s junior golf program.

Bobby Sly will set up on the 18th hole, challenging a limited number of players to a “beat the champ” challenge – Bobby using hickory shaft clubs.  Other Hickory players will join club members for a demo/challenge round.  Prizes will be awarded for the best period dress.

For information on registering a foursome for the tournament contact the Pro Shop at Proshop@pictongolf.ca, or call 613 476-1485.
